Welcome

A broad and balanced curriculum preparing children for life’s challenges.

Our Key Stage 3 Curriculum...

The King James Academy is proud to be developing an exciting and challenging curriculum for all our students from Year 5 and beyond. We are committed to providing a broad and balanced diet to enable students to prepare for the next stage in their learning whatever their passions and ambitions.

Students’ timetablesKingjames114 are made up of 25 one hour lessons a week covering a range of subjects from the core curriculum of English, Maths and Science and subjects such as Design Technology, Music and Computer Science.  Contrary to the national trend, we are placing an increasing focus on Modern Foreign Languages, believing this to be vital in supporting our students to become global citizens. Students spend an additional 25 minutes a day in form time where they have the opportunity to develop skills to support their learning both in and out of the classroom.

In Year 7 our students are given the opportunity to begin to study a second Modern Foreign Language, French. Those identified as likely to struggle with this extra challenge participate in bespoke literacy support lessons to ensure all students are ready for the challenge of GCSE in Year 10.

Business is introduced as a compulsory subject in Year 9 allowing students to gain experience of the world of marketing and develop presentation skills vital for a wide range of careers as well as gaining an understanding of the subject before choosing GCSE option subjects in the January of Year 9.

Our thought-provoking and enriching ‘drop down days’ enable students to explore aspects of the Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) and Religious Education curricula. Activities such as mock interviews conducted by members of our local business community, developing budgeting skills and presentations by the police and fire service help to prepare our students for life beyond school.

We believe that knowing our students well allows us to maximise their potential in all subjects, whether it be through using Accelerated Reader to boost literacy levels, targeted intervention sessions or in-class support. With specialist teachers working in specialist rooms, our students thrive and have the confidence to take on new challenges.

*Whilst the vast majority of students will be expected to pick up a second language in Year 7, we appreciate that this is not always appropriate for all students, particularly those who struggle with English. Students are carefully monitored and grouped accordingly with students not taking French participating in bespoke literacy support lessons.

**Art, Design Technology, Music and Drama are taught in half-termly rotations which are structured to ensure that all students have the opportunity to study each subject before making option choices in January.

***Business and Computer Science are taught in rotation to ensure students have the opportunity to study both subjects before making option choices in January.
